Favourites for the Africa cup of nations include the likes of host Egypt, Senegal, holders Cameroon. Other contenders include Morocco, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia and Nigeria. The atmosphere will be at fever-pitch in most of Africa’s major cities. For the duration of the entire tournament, football reigns supreme. The tournament commences this summer for the first time since its 62 years history. This came about to avoid clashing with the European club football calendar. This is as a result of players called up by African nations for the tournament. Which usually leaves European clubs shorthanded at a vital point in a season.
Many players’ aspirations to become the best player on the continent will add extra motivation for them to play at their best. The Africa cup of nations has proven vital to the Awarding of the said award in the year it is held. That wasn’t the case though in 2013 when Nigeria won but Ivorian Yaya Toure won the award with John Obi Mikel in second place. The award ceremony, then held in Nigeria, left many Nigerians with a bad taste in their mouth. The front runners for the award this year should include Liverpool duo, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. This puts their exploits in club football into viewpoint.
