The 16th edition of the European football championship or Euro 2020 kicks off in the summer of next year. The Euro 2020 competition will be hosted in several countries as a celebration of its 60 years of existence. The tournament is scheduled to be held in 12 cities in 12 UEFA countries. the competition runs from 12 June to 12 July 2020. VAR (Video Assistance Referee) will be used for the first time in the competition. It is to assist officials with their decisions during matches. The Portuguese national team is the last team to win the competition. They beat host country France in the final in by a goal to nil courtesy of Eder’s strike in extra time. Qualification for Euro 2020
Of the 24 teams expected to compete, 20 teams have already qualified. Other teams are battling for the remaining 4 places in playoffs. The qualifiers saw many teams impress. Italy and Belgium, in particular, winning all their qualifying group matches. They are countries to watch out for in the tournament proper. Belgium, in particular, has shown that they can go the distance. This is due to their impressive performances in recent international competitions. They should be among the favourite come June 2020 when the competitions kickoffs. Defending champions Portugal winners of the inaugural UEFA Nations League should also be in the running. World champions France are not out of the running as they showed in the world cup in 2018.
The teams are now in groups for the Euro 2020 competition. All the teams know their opponents for the showpiece event. Even those involved in playoffs know the group and countries they are to face.
