The semi-finalists at the ongoing Africa cup of nations are now known and the weak teams finally separated from the strong. We will be taking a look at the performances of the individual teams and how the clashes played out in this afcon quarter-final review. We bring you the Afcon quarter-final review to keep you occupied before the semi-finals scheduled for Sunday.
Senegal vs Benin
Senegal became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa cup of nations in Egypt. The lone goal with which they won was scored by Idrissa Gueye who was assisted himself by Sadio Mane. The Senegalese were dominant from start to finish in this encounter having the most possession. The most shots overall and shots on target were also won by the Senegalese in this encounter. They should count themselves fortunate though because they’ve been fortunate not to concede and keep winning with low scorelines. That might not be the case against quality opposition in the semi-final and final if they should get there.
Nigeria vs South Africa
This encounter has become famous due to the inability of the Bafana Bafana team’s inability to win the Super Eagles. In this particular encounter, the Nigeria team proved threatening on the counter and should have scored more. The match ended 2-1 in favour of the super eagles with Samuel Chukwueze scoring in the first half. Bongani Zungu scored on the 71st minute to equalise for South Africa. South Africa’s equalising goal was controversial as a player was adjudged to be offside before VAR overruled the linesman’s decision. A late header from Troost-Ekong in the 89th minute broke South African hearts and sent the Eagles to the semi-finals.
Ivory Coast vs Algeria
The Ivorians lost yesterday on penalties after playing out a fulltime 1-1 draw with Algeria. Sofiane Feghouli put Algeria in front after a cross found him in the box from Bensebaini in the 20th minute. The equaliser came through Jonathan Kodjia and assisted by Wilfried Zaha. Two penalty misses from the Ivorian compared to one from the Algerians sent the Algerians through. They next meet the super eagles in the Semi-final scheduled for Sunday night.
Madagascar vs Tunisia
Madagascar had a memorable run in the Africa cup of nations but the Tunisian team proved too strong. They were able to hold Tunisia at bay in the first half but the Tunisians ran riot in the second half. Early goals in the second half from Ferjani Sassi and Youssef Msakni had them in charge. Naim Sliti scored in the third minute of extra time to round off the scoring. They meet Senegal in the First match of the semi-final on Sunday to determine who will be in the final.
