The Africa cup of nations has gotten to the quarter-final final stage and teams are now more careful to reduce costly mistakes which can send a team packing. Morocco vs Benin
This clash was something of a David versus Goliath contest but the Moroccans didn’t take their chances and will rue it. Morocco lost surprisingly after being knocked out by Benin in a 1-1 draw match by 90 minutes. The game went to penalties where they lost 4-1 with Olympique Lyonnais’s Hakim Ziyech among those who didn’t score.
Uganda vs Senegal
A Sadio Mane goal in the fifteenth minute of this clash was enough to send the Senegalese to the quarter-final. He now has three goals to his name tied with Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo. Despite the best efforts of their opponents to equalise they were able to hold on for the win.
Nigeria vs Cameroon
This match proved quite a spectacle for all those who tuned in to watch. Two African giants provided the world with excitement when the eagles drawing first blood early in the half. The scoring started through Odion Ighalo’s deflected shot which sent Onana the wrong way. Two quickfire goals from the Cameroonian late in the first half put them in front. In the second half, the Eagles showed they weren’t going to lie down and wait for a miracle before Ighalo scored again and assisted Alex Iwobi for his goal to help the Eagles win 3-2.
Egypt vs South Africa
Host Egypt was sent packing by a Thembinkosi Lorch strike in the 85th minute of the game to send the South Africans through to the quarters. The Pharaohs had the majority of the possession throughout the match but were unable to carve out a chance to score. The South Africans Bided their time and had the most shots on goal before the strike by Lorch went in to send them through. The Egyptians will be disappointed with their overall effort and the lost chance to win on home soil.
Madagascar vs DR Congo
Underrated constantly because of their status as debutants, they’ve made teams pay dearly. With the scalp of the super eagles followed by a Penalty shootout victory against Dr Congo to make the quarter-final. A 2-2 draw after 90 minutes saw Madagascar win on Penalties 4-2.
Algeria vs Guinea
The Algerians won comfortably and with quite a performance to progress against the Guineans. The match ended 3-0 in favour of Algerians with Mohamed Yousef Belaili, Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas scoring the goals.
Mali vs Ivory Coast
Mali was knocked out by the Ivorians through a lone goal scored by crystal palace player Wilfried Zaha. The Malians have been quite impressive in this tournament but found the Ivorians an insurmountable task this time. The Ivorians, however, go on to meet Algeria in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Ghana vs Tunisia
Ghana never really got going in this year’s tournament after only winning against Guinea-Bissau and drawing the other two group stage matches. This match ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes with an own goal by Rami Bedoui in added time giving them Ghana hope. Taha Yacine Khenissi had put the Tunisians ahead in the 73rd minute before Ghana equalised. Tunisia, however, won 4-5 on penalties to qualify for the quarter-final.
