Semi-finals preview

The semi-finals preview of the Fifa Women world cup and the Copa America is here. These matches will be played over the next couple of days starting today. The teams in the FIFA women world cup semi-finals include England, USA, Netherlands and Sweden. While in Copa America, Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile are the semi-finalists. these are tournaments we’ve been covering from the start.

FIFA Women World Cup

England vs USA

The USA made it this far after beating Hosts France in the quarter-final round matchup 2-1. they’ve been impressive from the group stages and are favourites against the three lionesses of England. Who qualified by comfortably beating fellow contenders, Norway three nil. They also have put in grand performances in this tournament and deserve to be here. England, although underdogs in this encounter with the USA, discounting them outright must be considered folly, considering performances. So this will prove quite the spectacle but the USA will edge this match slightly and move to the final.

Netherlands vs Sweden

Italy and Germany were both knocked out in the quarter-final by the pair of Netherland and Sweden. The scoreline of the respective matches are 2-0 and 2-1 and shows how determined both teams are to make it this far. Only the USA has beaten the Swedish team so far in this tournament while the Netherland remains unbeaten. The Netherlands is the favourites for this match scheduled for Wednesday but that doesn’t mean a surprise is not in the cards for the Swedish National team.

Copa America

Brazil vs Argentina

The highlight of the semi-finals preview matches in Copa America. This match is still something of a conundrum with both teams not in good form at the moment. Brazil looked solid when they trounced Peru in the final group stage match 5-0. They were expected to win the quarter-final match against Paraguay but only went through after penalties which could have gone either way. Argentina, on the other hand, managed to scrape through to the quarter-finals where they beat Venezuela 2-0. They are the only team of the four semi-finalists to beat their opponent in 90 minutes and not penalties. But their performances have left many wanting more and they must improve in these latter stages. Their best hope remains Lionel Messi who is yet to play a good match at the Copa. A draw and the match decided on penalties isn’t too farfetched in the opinion of this writer.

Chile vs Peru

Two times defending champions Chile got past Colombia after winning on penalties. They’ll be Hoping to make it three in a row after winning the 2015 & 2016 editions respectively. Peru will be their next obstacle after they were able to beat Uruguay on penalties. Although Uruguay scored three times all three goals were cancelled after the use of VAR. Peru kept Uruguay from scoring a legitimate goal during the whole 90 minutes. Then they won on penalty after Luis Suarez missed his penalty of the ten players who played. Chile should make light work of their opposition but considering winning against a team who beat Chile in the group stages, they shouldn’t be taken lightly.
