Copa America begins

Copa America 2019 will be the 46th edition of the quadrennial tournament. It entails nations on the South American continent competing against one another and has lasted for over a century. Brazil is this edition’s host and will play the first match against Bolivia as is customary.

Superstars abound in the Copa America competition with Argentina’s talisman Lionel Messi coming easily to memory. He returns after another successful individual season with one major trophy won with his club. His partners Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Arturo Vidal and Arthur Melo were all called up for their various countries. Other notable names include Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria, Alisson Becker, Alexis Sanchez & James Rodriguez.

The tournament will feature two invited AFC countries in Japan and Qatar amongst its competitors to complete the 12 teams. It begins on the 14th, June and will be played over three weeks. The final will be played by the eventual finalists on July 7 at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The Chile national teams are two-times defending champion winning the 2015 and 2016 editions. After defeating the Argentine national team in the finals of both tournaments. The latter of which played out in the USA to commemorate the 100th year of the CONMEBOL and Copa America. It is the first time the competition was staged outside of South America.

The start of Copa America will coincide with the end of the ongoing U-20 world cup. Three international competitions will run concurrently for only a matter of hours. Copa America, the Fifa women world cup and the under 20 world cup in Poland. The final of the Under 20 world cup comes up a day after Copa America begins. The Fifa women world cup is in the mix and AFCON will soon begin starting barely a week after Copa America. This will keep punters busy for the foreseeable future as covered in an earlier post and will be analysed by our gurus.

groups

Three groups of four teams were mapped out to challenge each other for the chance to become champions come July 7. Usual suspects Brazil will miss Neymar through injury, Uruguay is a contender while chile will hope to defend the trophy once again in Brazil. Lionel Messi’s Argentina will be playing in an unfamiliar role of slight underdog in the Copa. This regards the recent overhaul of the 2018 world cup squad after their dismal performance in that tournament. Opponents will exercise a bit of caution because of the magisterial presence of their captain and the injection of new blood into the squad.

Favorites for the Copa america trophy

The competition presents a number of countries a chance to win a major trophy after several years of trying. Brazil is a strong contender, Uruguay comes to mind being the most successful nation in the competition and even Argentina. Lionel Messi is still searching for his first silverware with the national team and his country cannot be overlooked. He had three consecutive near misses in finals of major competitions including the final of the 2014 world cup final. This might be his last chance and the relatively fresh faces of the new Argentina squad wouldn’t give his strongest supporters much hope of winning it. Perhaps that might be the sharpest weapon in their armoury or likewise, bring about an early and humiliating exit. Messi being there will make discounting Argentina outright foolhardy though.
