Portugal wins inaugural nations league, FIFA women world cup in full swing

Portugal claimed their second trophy under the tutelage of Fernando Santos. The victory over the Netherlands makes them the winner of the inaugural Uefa nations league. The two countries made the finals after topping their respective tables in the group stage played last year. The finals which held in Portugal saw the Netherlands conquer England and Santos’ men won against Switzerland in the semi-finals.

Both teams had chances in the game to score and win the game for their respective countries. Portugal ultimately proved the more valiant when things were still in the balance and the game still up for grabs for anyone willing to take the chance and become the hero.

The match ended 1-0 with Goncalo Guedes proving the difference and getting the goal for his country. He scored after nice work and a slightly overhit cutback from Bernardo Silva. He did well to still hit the ball well after it looked like it might have gone past him. Although Jasper Cillesen will rue not keeping the ball out after getting a hand on it but was unable to keep it from going into the net. The Netherlands tried their best to pull level but the task proved too much. Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet evening by his standards on the pitch. With Virgil van Dijk proving up to the task once again against one of the game’s all-time great. He was helpless though when the goal came and was unable to stop Portugal winning the trophy.

Bernardo Silva became the best player of the tournament ahead of Ronaldo. He was the best player of the tournament by voters count. Ronaldo scored a hat trick in the semi-final match against Switzerland to ensure Portugal made the final and would’ve hoped he’ll win the award. when individual accolades were handed out amid celebrations for winning that proved not to be the case.
